Best for: Exclusive merino knits and vintage finish linen in gorgeous colourways
I’ve waxed lyrical about The Fabric Store in other articles, but they are definitely my go-to for merino knit fabric and linen. My two favourite ranges are their ZQ Premium Merino knit range and their vintage finish linen.
The merino knit offering is ethically sourced and custom dyed in over 35 contemporary shades. At 200gsm it’s a nice multi-purpose weight that is perfect for the Queelsland climate. It’s suitable for all sorts of tops, t-shirts and dresses. I’ve also made lounge pants in several different colours which I live in while working from home in winter (secret pyjamas!).
The vintage finish linen is also a great multi-purpose weight at 160gsm which makes it suitable for lots of dressmaking projects. It’s certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and has a beautiful, slightly worn patina and is lusciously soft. It feels really comfortable next to your skin so I absolutely love wearing this linen.
You’ll find the Brisbane store nestled amongst the hipster cafes and interiors stores in the valley, so it’s pretty easy to get to and well worth a visit (after brunch, of course).

Best for: Designer European fabrics
Alla Moda specialises in designer European fabrics, from couture fabric houses such as Dolce & Gabbana and Armani. You’ll also find French lace, Italian silk and linen, Swiss cotton and embroidery along with luscious trims and embellishments.
Cottons start at $38 per metre, linen starts at $35 and ranges through to $140 per metre and very special couture embroideries are several hundred dollars per metre.
So Alla Moda really is the place to go for special occasion fabrics or that beautiful refined wool fabric for your job interview suit. They are located centrally in the Valley with parking directly outside.
Not surprisingly, Calico House does actually stock a lovely range of natural calicos in several different weights and weaves. This theme continues with some natural textured curtain and upholstery linens and solid coloured interior weight cottons in a rainbow of muted colours. Checks, stripes and Indian prints round out the range.
It’s certainly worth a trip to their Paddington store, as although they have some fabrics listed on their web site, you’ll find a larger range in store. You’ll also find tablecloths, rugs, blinds, cushions, hammocks and other soft furnishings in store
Voodoo Rabbit

Best for: Quirky quilting fabric, cork and vinyl fabric and bag making supplies
As the name suggests Voodoo Rabbit is a store with a big personality! They stock very particular types of fabric and haberdashery.
They offer a good range of basics such as quirky quilting weight fabrics, denim and various types of canvas, including waterproof and waxed canvas (which is often tricky to find). Their range also extends into the not-so-basic such as cork fabric and trim and marine vinyl and mesh vinyl in an assortment of colours.
Voodoo Rabbit’s haberdashery offering is also very solid. They stock loads of bag and purse making supplies, various trims, zips and stabilisers and sewing tools including an excellent range of Clover products.
They have a strong online presence but also have a showroom at Woolloongabba that is open at various times throughout the week.
Sachs and Cornish

Best for: Vibrant designer furnishing fabrics, including vintage and antique
Sachs and Cornish are sisters who run a store at the Paddington Antique Centre selling vintage, new and remnant interior furnishing fabrics. They also offer a custom made lampshade and cushion service.
Their range incudes a beautifully curated range of textile designers including Anna Spiro, Penny Morrison, Diane Bergeron, and Lisa fine. I’d describe their style as traditional with a colourful, contemporary twist.
The sisters clearly run their business with style, passion and a sense of humour. The Words of Wisdom on their web site includes – ‘Don’t show off, that’s bad taste and will stress out guests and pets.” Alleluia!

Best for: All sorts of lovely dressmaking fabrics including bridal and special occasion
With loads of 5 star reviews, Fabric Collection is a local favourite!
They offer a massive range of bridal, evening and special occasion fabrics. Their daywear fabric range is also extensive and includes an excellent range bamboo jersey and other stretch fabrics, luscious linens, all sorts of cottons and silks and lots of vibrant prints with a distinct Italian edge.
Despite having a very clear and easy to navigate online store, I suspect that Fabric Collection store is not particularly well known outside Brisbane. So bookmark this one and sign up for their newsletter if you’re an avid dressmaker!
Peppermint Stitches

Best for: Quilting fabrics and sewing supplies
Peppermint Stitches is a gorgeous, friendly little quilting and sewing machine store in Toowong.
They stock quilting fabrics including Amy Buter, Anna Maria Horner, Tula Pink and Kaffe Fassett, along with reproduction fabrics from the 1800’s and 1930’s.
Peppermint Stitches offer the full range of Bernina and Janome sewing machines and overlockers.
They also stock cross stitch supplies and embroidery threads and have a jam packed schedule of quilting and applique classes.
Quick Stitch Quilting

Best for: Quilting fabric, classes, retreats and longarm quilting service
Quick Stitch Quilting is a community-minded quilting store, offering a decent range of contemporary and traditional quilting fabrics along with loads of extra wide quilt backing and wadding. They also offer a professional longarm quilting service.
Quick Stitch Quilting also has a huge range of classes and special events. Interestingly, a core part of their offering involves quilting and embroidery retreats in the country for their members. Heaven!

East Coast Fabrics

Best for: A massive range of quilting and craft fabric at great prices
East Coast Fabrics has something for everyone; basics, contemporary, novelty and traditional craft and quilting fabric.
They have a bricks and mortar store at Lawnton, just north of Strathpine, with a super organised, no-frills, discount vibe. They have excellent reviews, with most reviewers stating what great value they offer along with friendly and helpful customer service.
If you can’t make the trek to the store, they also have a very clear and easy to navigate online store.
With a solid range of quilting fabric from Alexander Henry, Riley Blake, Hoffman, Tilda and Tula Pink, Make it Sew is the quintessential local quilt shop for Boondall residents. They also sell Sashiko fabric, threads and kits and offer a longarm quilting service.
A range of classes and lovely friendly staff round out the package.
Minkee Minky Fabrics

Best for: Original designs digitally printed in natural earthy tones
Minkee Minky Fabrics specialises in original, fresh patterned prints in a gorgeous earthy colour palette. They print these onto a range of basecloths including cotton, linen, French Terry, PUL and lycra.
A range of solid coloured cottons, linens, waffles and ribs in co-ordinating colours round out the collection. And as their name suggests, they also stock a comprehensive range of minky fabrics in beautiful colours.
If you want to avoid disappointment, you can pre-order their designs as new batches are released or buy what they have in stock from their online store. They open their warehouse at North Lakes to the public by appointment.

Selective Fine Fabrics

Best for: Bridal, evening and special occasion fabrics
As their name suggests, Selective Fine Fabrics specialise in bridal, eveningwear and special occasion fabrics. They have a retail store on Logan Road at Upper Mount Gravatt and a well stocked online store.
You’ll find luscious silk, satin, lace, brocade and tulle all with a distinctly European flair. In the daywear department, you’ll find beautiful Italian suiting along with vibrant prints on cotton, linen and silk.
As you’d expect with high quality Italian fabrics, pricing is up there at over $100 per metre and stretching up to the $300 mark for fancy wool suiting.
East Coast Textiles

Best for: A great local fabric store with a solid range of quilting and dressmaking fabrics
Quilting meets dressmaking fabric is how I’d describe East Coast Textiles; there’s something for everyone with a sewing machine.
For the dressmakers you’ll find a good standard range of cottons, along with a small range of knits, rayon, linen and lycra.
For the quilters, you’ll find a very solid range of novelty prints, blenders, solids, fat quarter packs and backings. The collection spans the divide between traditional and contemporary with some novelty factor thrown in.
Their bricks and mortar store is located at Springwood and their online store is well stocked and easy to navigate.

The Fabric and Felt Studio

Best for: Wool felt, classes and craft fabrics
Known for their felting and embroidery classes and supplies, The Fabric and Felt Studio is a little creative haven in leafy Gumdale (near Chandler).
They have excellent reviews for their classes and also stock a cute range of colourful craft and quilting fabric. Wool felt is often tricky to find and the studio stocks a rainbow of colours given their specialty in felting.
